Mbayani, Nkolokoti crowned Mayor’s Trophy champions

Nkolokoti and Mbayani full primary schools were on Saturday crowned champions of Blantyre City Mayor’s Trophy in football and netball at Blantyre Youth Centre.

The finals were graced by Mayor Councillor Wild Ndipo and other Blantyre City Council officials.

Mbayani beat Nkolokoti 30-13 to emerge champions in netball whereas, in football, Nkolokoti edged Namame 2-1.

Ndipo said he was impressed with the performance of the under-14 players and hoped that steps would be taken by relevant authorities in the game to nurture the talent.

“They should learn to combine sport with education for a better future. We always give them the example of Football Association of Malawi President, Walter Nyamilandu, who continued as a player after graduating from the University of Malawi,” Ndipo said.

The mayor further asked Blantyre residents to support the initiative, besides the financial support the trophy gets from FDH and First Merchant banks.

Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) managed the competition on behalf of the council.

Massa Blantyre Urban Chairperson, Ignazio Libwaloh, said the competition encountered a number of challenges such as age cheating.

“Lessons have been drawn and we intend to put in place strict measures to ensure that we avoid such occurrences in this year’s competition,” Libwaloh said.

Nkolokoti’s Evance Manyumba and Petro Bolomwa of Namame were awarded as Player of the Tournament and Best Goalkeeper in football, respectively.

In netball, Dorothy Bowman and Bertha Makwinja, both from Mbayani, were selected Player of the Tournament and Best Shooter in netball, respectively.

Nkolokoti took home K700,000 as football champions while Mbayani received K500,000 for emerging victorious in netball.
