MCP accuses Mec of playing double standards

 By Jameson Chauluka:

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) secretary general, Eisenhower Mkaka, Monday accused the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) of playing double standards in the way it obeyed court orders.

He said this at a press briefing before, later Monday afternoon, Mec Chairperson, Justice Jane Ansah, declared President Peter Mutharika as winner of the elections.

Mkaka said the MCP was surprised that Mec only respected one part of the order of delaying announcement of results while disobeying the vote recount which was a condition of the same order.

“We have been trying to engage them to tell us all the logistics regarding the vote recount the court ordered but they say they cannot meet us because the matter is in court. We understand the law but all we are saying is that we should respect the law in full,” Mkaka said.

But, speaking at Comesa Hall Monday, Ansah said the commission respects the law.
