MCP billboards, flags vandalised

By Pilirani Kachinziri:

Suspected Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Cadets on Wednesday night vandalised Malawi Congress Party (MCP) campaign paraphernalia at Kwacha in Blantyre.

A billboard of MCP president Lazarus Chakwera was vandalised while flags were uprooted as political tension keeps rising ahead of the May 21 Tripartite Elections.

MCP spokesperson, Eisenhower Mkaka, said they suspect that DPP Cadets were behind the vandalism.

“This is pure provocation. What is happening now is total chaos,” Mkaka said.

The two parties are presumably battling for control of presidential, parliamentary and Local Government bragging rights in the district, which has over 400,000 voters.

“DPP should not think that we are afraid of them. It is just that we have chosen the path of peace. We can give them a dose of their own medicine. They should know that, at some point, we will be stretched to the limit and will defend ourselves,” he said.

Mkaka said DPP also defaced Chakwera’s billboard at Clock Tower in Blantyre Central Business District recently.

He said MCP has since lodged a complaint to Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec).

DPP secretary general, Gresedler Jeffrey, referred this reporter to the party’s spokesperson Nicholas Dausi, who could not pick up his phone as we went to press.

“I can’t comment on that; talk to the spokesperson. I have to respect hierarchy,” she said.

MCP director of campaign, Moses Kunkuyu, told a political rally in Mangochi District yesterday that people would not vote because of flags and billboards but out of conscience.

Mec spokesperson, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, confirmed that MCP have lodged a complaint regarding the vandalised billboards and removed flags, but that it was not mentioning any political party.

“The commission is considering the complaint and we will advise on the way forward,” he said.

Last week, DPP running mate Everton Chimulirenji also accused UTM supporters of vandalising their campaign materials in the Northern Region.
