Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has donated K1.1 million to families that have lost relatives to a road accident that claimed 12 lives in Mchinji District on Tuesday.
Speaking during the burial of the 12 in Kapanila Village, MCP president Lazarus Chakwera said the party would render a helping hand to the bereaved families as one way of taking care of people’s needs.
“In times like these, people are filled with sorrow and the best thing we can do is to help them with what we have. What we are giving cannot bring the lost lives back but [it], at least, [can] help in other things needed,” Chakwera said.
He further urged people to observe road signs when using public roads.
Village Head Kapanila, speaking on behalf of bereaved families, said the donation would ease some of the challenges families are facing in the aftermath of the accident.
“As we all know, losing 12-related people at the same time is heart-rending as funeral arrangements demand a lot of things. Assistance from the MCP, the government and other well-wishers has eased our pain,” Kapanira said.
The accident occurred in Mchinji District, along Mkonkha– Namitete Road.
