MCP mourns Mwalwanda

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) officials have described the death of Karonga Central member of Parliament, Cornelius Mwalwanda as a tragedy and a huge loss.

Mwalwanda died on Thursday night at Kamuzu Central Hospital and, according to MCP second vice president Harry Mkandawire, died of Covid-19.

He was laid to rest yesterday at Area 18 Cemetery in Lilongwe.

Mkandawire said Mwalwanda was a pillar for MCP in the Northern Region and until his death was Director of Economic Affairs in the party.

Mkandawire said MCP has lost a prominent politician who would have helped in changing Malawi for the better.

He said President Lazarus Chakwera is saddened with the death of late Mwalwanda, who according to Mkandawire, was also a personal friend to the MCP leader.

“We are sad with the death of our member. He was a leader and very dedicated to party activities.

“It is our plea to our fellow members to make sure we observe precaution measures to prevent the Covid-19 pandemic which has taken the life of our member,” Mkandawire said.

MCP second deputy youth director, Matheus Mgemezulu, also mourned Mwalwanda.

“He taught us how best to work as youth in the party. He was humble, loyal and dedicated to the party. He used his resources for the sake of the victory of Tonse Alliance,” Mgemezulu said.

Mwalwanda once served as a cabinet minister during Joyce Banda and Bingu Wa Mutharika regimes.

He obtained his doctorate in Economics-International Trade and Finance in 1979 from University of Toronto in Canada.

Mlalwanda once served as Principal Advisor and Head of United Nations Economic Commission for Africa at Geneva Office.

He is survived by a wife and four children.
