MCP MPs summoned over alleged assault

Two Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Members of Parliament Amon Nkhata and Richard Chimwendo Banda were on Thursday last week summoned by Kanengo Police following allegations that they ‘assaulted’ ex-party presidential aspirant Lyton Dzombe.

Nkhata and Chimwendo Banda are legislators for Kasungu Central and Dowa East respectively.

According to National Police Spokesperson, Nicholas Gondwa, two other party members Brain Damba and Vumani Chidzanja Nkhoma were also summoned over the same charges.

In an interview yesterday, Gondwa said Dzombe lodged a complaint about the alleged assault on February 3, saying some of his property was damaged and that K500, 000 went missing during the fracas.

“The MPs, together with the other two members, appeared before Kanengo Police Station on the 4th and we charged the four with assault, malicious damage to property and theft and they are expected to appear before court soon. We have also recorded their caution statements and they are expected to come again on Tuesday [tomorrow],” said Gondwa.

Dzombe is believed to be among some ‘rebellious’ party members causing confusion in the party.

Reports also show that recently, Dzombe was found holding secret meetings with seven district chairpersons who have since been suspended for allegedly decampaigning party president Lazarus Chakwera.
