Lilongwe Principal Resident Magistrate Court Monday granted bail to 18 Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters who were arrested for allegedly committing offences in connection with the recent demonstrations against May 21 presidential election results.

The suspects, including Lilongwe City Centre Member of Parliament-elect Alfred Jiya, are answering charges ranging from malicious damage to proposing violence.

Lawyer for the suspects, Charles Mhone, said the suspects have provided a bail bond of K10, 000 each, among other conditions.

“The court has granted all the suspects bail with conditions that some of them should pay a bail bond of K10, 000 each and they should be reporting to their nearest police stations.

Considering that this was just an application for bail, the case is still proceeding for hearing,” he said The suspects are being accused of making statements intending to damage or destroy government property while the second count accuses Jiya and five others of willfully and unlawfully damaging entrance security glasses of Reserve Bank of Malawi offices.

Immediately after the parties had completed all the bail processes, the suspects, with other MCP supporters who were waiting outside the court, were seen chanting songs in praise of their party leader Lazarus Chakwera.

The supporters were arrested on June 6 2019 during demonstrations in protest against electoral results after Malawi Electoral Commission declared President Peter Mutharika the winner of the presidential race.
