Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM supporters have reportedly organised joint political rallies in all the country’s political regions to show solidarity.
The rallies, dubbed Moment of Greatness, are scheduled to take place at Masintha Ground in Lilongwe, Mzuzu Upper Stadium, St August Three (Mangochi District), Zomba Gymkhana Club and Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre.
“The moment of greatness as the forces of change converge to usher in a better tomorrow for Malawi is now inevitable. Let us make change happen,” reads part of the promotional poster.
UTM director of publicity, Joseph Chidanti-Malunga, confirmed that the parties are expected to hold joint rallies.
However, Chidanti-Malunga was quick to clear that the idea of the rallies between MCP and his party was hatched by supporters from both parties.
“The party belongs to the people. As leaders, we need to make sure that we are doing what the people, who are the owners of the party, want,” Chidanti-Malunga said.
He, however, said a committee comprising members from the two parties would meet to discuss the actual dates of the rallies.
Chidanti-Malunga refused to comment when asked whether the two parties were planning to form an electoral alliance.
MCP secretary general, Eisenhower Mkaka, could neither confirm nor deny the planned rallies saying he was in Parliament.
But a source in MCP confirmed that the party’s leadership had no problem with the joint political rallies.
Political and social commentator, Moses Mkandawire, said there was no harm for the two parties to work together.
He, however, challenged the two parties to be clear with the terms of reference for their relationship to avoid confusing their supporters.
“An alliance or lack of it should not be influenced by the outcome of the court case. However, it is good for political parties to work together at this stage,” he said.
