Malawi Defence Force (MDF) had a week to remember after dominating the inaugural Inter- Defence and Security Agencies Sports Festival held at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The festival attracted sports persons from all security institutions namely MDF, Malawi Police Service, Malawi Prison and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services.

At the end of the event, MDF won gold in football (both men and women’s) basketball (men), boxing, athletics, volleyball, netball and tug of war.

In athletics, highly-rated athlete Asimenye Simwaka shone like a beacon to dominate the event whereas in women’s football, MDF featured athletes like Patricia Nyirenda, Sabina Thom and Salome Vinkhumbo.

Malawi Police claimed gold in basketball (women), silver in netball, volleyball, tug of war, boxing and bronze in men’s football.

The teams received monetary prizes and medals.

Minister of Youth and Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda said the games provided a unique opportunity for sportspersons from security institutions to network and share ideas.

“It is my plea that the unity you have demonstrated here should be reflected in your your working environment,” Chimwendo Banda said.

Taking his turn, MDF commander General Vincent Nundwe also said the sports festival was a good platform for enhancing ties between the defence and security institutions.

“The sports festival is very important. I am happy that all the sports persons exercised discipline during the festival,” Nundwe said.

The inaugural sports festival started on Monday and ended on Friday.
