A Malawi Defense Force soldier from Chilumba Barracks and a girl whose particulars are not yet known died on Sunday evening in a head-on-collision of two vehicles at Uliwa in Karonga District.
At least six people sustained serious injuries while 18 escaped with minor injuries.
Northern Region assistant publicist, Martin Bwanali, identified the soldier as Anthony Chunga, 36, from Salawayake Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mtwalo in Mzimba District.
Bwanali said the accident happened at around 8 o’clock in the evening at Uliwa Trading Centre when a vehicle— Toyota Dyna registration number NA 7187— collided with a minibus, registration number CP 9379.
“The soldier [Chunga] was driving the vehicle in the direction of Uliwa Trading Centre with four passengers aboard. He failed to negotiate a bend and later hit the minibus, which was coming from the opposite direction,” Bwanali said.

Bwanali said Chunga failed to negotiate a left bend because of speeding.
He said both the soldier and a girl sustained head injuries and both died while on their way to Karonga District Hospital.
Six people who have sustained serious injuries are the minibus driver; Kabubula Chilupsa, 36; Chancy Nkhonjera, 22; Junior Saidi Mhango, 7; Anold Mphande, 24; and Tilibe Menson, 21.
