Malawi Defence Force (MDF) C o m m a n d e r, General Griffin Supuni Phiri, has commended military teams for their impressive performance in various sports disciplines across the country.

Speaking at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday after watching two MDF teams, Kamuzu Barracks (KB) and Moyale, in the final of the 2017 Fisd Challenge Cup, Supuni Phiri said the teams’ performance is enough proof that the country’s soldiers are also good sportsmen.

“Since we established the Department of Sports and Culture at MDF, the performance of our teams has improved tremendously. The meeting of KB and Moyale in the finals of the Fisd Cup bears testimony to the strides that we have made in improving sports among our soldiers,” Supuni Phiri said.

Last season, KB made history by becoming the first military team to win the TNM Super League. MDF teams have also been dominant in boxing, volleyball and athletics.

As a way of rewarding excellence among soldiers in sports, MDF organised a Sports Gala Award ceremony at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe late last year.

Supuni said details of this year’s sports awards will be announced at an appropriate time.

After Saturday’s win through Manase Chiyesa’s goal, KB Head Coach, Billy Phambala, said the victory was a timely consolation for his team’s failure to defend the league title.

“I knew that we would win the Fisd Cup this season. Failing to defend the league championship was very painful but it is good that we have something to show for our efforts this season,” Phambala said.

This was Phambala’s third trophy as KB coach, having won the 2016 TNM Super League and the Carlsberg Cup in 2013.

After the Saturday match, KB got K12 million plus a trophy whereas Moyale received K5 million.
