Mdina Business Solutions owner, Tiwone Mdina, has backed the staging of this year’s Mdina Malawi Open Championship at Mphatso Hotel in Mzuzu.
“During the early years, it was taking place in Blantyre because it was a regional tournament and players from other regions were competing as guests upon receiving an invitation. This time, we rotate venues basing on the needs of a particular region,” Mdina said.
He was reacting to debate on Play-chess Malawi Facebook page and Chess Malawi WhatsApp group, questioning the rationale behind the hosting of the event in Mzuzu for the second successive year.
“We felt that, unlike Mzuzu, Blantyre and Lilongwe had hosted several national tournaments. We feel that, through this arrangement, many players would be motivated to do well in the sport,” he said.
The sponsor said the participation of foreign players in the championship was an indication that the competition was growing.
Zambian Chitumbo Mwali won the championship for this year’s edition with 8.5 points.
The competition took place in Blantyre from 2010 to 2013, before moving to Mzuzu in 2014, then back to the commercial city the following year and Lilongwe last year.
