Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) will this weekend host a two-day qualifying tournament for Mdina Open Chess Championship.
The tournament is scheduled for Malawi National Council of Sports headquarters in Blantyre.
Over 30 players have registered for the championship.
Organising Committee member, Kissinger Kabuluzi, said eight outstanding players will qualify for the open section of the national finals.
Top eight female players will also reach the ladies’ section of the national finals.
“But if some ladies want to compete in the open section, we will not bar them because that is what we need for the sport to develop,” he said.
Kabuluzi said registration fee is K2,000 per individual whereas late registration fee is K3,000.
Recently, South Africa-based Malawian entrepreneur, Tiwone Mdina, renewed his commitment to sponsor the competition to the tune of K1 million.
Chess Association of Malawi Publicity Secretary, Makhosi Nyirenda, hailed Mdina for the continued sponsorship.
Last year, a record 10 Zambians took part in the championship which Lusaka-based player, Godwin Phiri, won at Simama Hotel in Lilongwe.
