Mdina chess set for June
Mdina Open Tournament will be played from June 14 to 18, Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has announced.
Chessam Publicity Secretary, Makhosi Nyirenda, said players from Angola, Zimbabwe and Zambia have expressed interest in competing in the championship.
“We are not surprised by the inquiries because this competition is now rated by the world chess body, Fide,” he said.
South Africa-based entreprenuer, Tiwone Mdina, sponsors the competition.
During last year’s event, open section champion pocketed K300,000 with a runner-up receiving K120,000 while third-placed individual received K60,000.
In the ladies’ section, the winner got K100,000 while the runner-up collected K60,000. Third-placed player went away with K40,000.
Zambian players dominate the competition with Goodwin Phiri lifting the 2016 accolade whereas Chifumbo Mwali won it last year.
Kajani Kaunda was the first Malawian to win the championship.
