Mdina Chess starts Friday

Some 91 players have registered to participate in the three-day Mdina Malawi Open Chess Championship set to kick off Friday at College of Medicine Sports Complex in Blantyre.

Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) Publicity Secretary, Makhosi Nyirenda, said the players include foreigners.

“All is set for the championship. We have four players from Mozambique, six from Zambia and Zimbabwe has sent two players. The games will be played over nine rounds with three games per day,” he said.

Nyirenda said defending champion, Zambian Phylis Mwilolo, is not available this year.

The games will be played in three sections, with the first section comprising players of rating of 1800 and above.

South Africa-based Joseph Mwale, at 2178, is the highest rated player in this section followed by Chiletso Chipanga at 2162 and Zambian Timothy Kabwe at 2126.

Other top players include Gerald Mphungu, Petros Mfune, George Mwale, Joseph Nyambalo, Alfred Chimthere, Mozambican Ignacio Caricoa and Zimbabwean Fortune Gandawa.

Section B consists of players below 1800 rating, including students from various colleges and veterans such as Gershom Chima, Stanley Kafere and young star Yebo Sanga.

The ladies section has players such as Ellen Mpinganjira, Linda Jambo, Desiderata Nkhoma, Tupokiwe Msukwa, veteran Celiana Sanga Nkata, Zimbabwean Talidyne Chaparadza, Mozambicans Sheilla Sitoi , Nuzela Fanela and Daisy Huwa.
