Mec calls on voters to participate in by-elections

Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) has urged eligible voters to register their names to be able to vote in the August 3 2022 by-elections in Chitipa, Karonga and Balaka as voter registration and verification ends today.

In a statement released Sunday, Mec Director of Media and Public Relations Sangwani Mwafulirwa said even those whose national identity cards expired would be assisted.

Mwafulirwa added that there would be no extension to the period that was provided for voter registration and verification.

“If they registered in the previous elections, we encourage them to go and verify their names in the voter’s register.

“It is very important that they should go and verify because if there is any issue, we can resolve it now whilst we have ample time unlike discovering it during polling,” he said.

The wards, Lupembe in Karonga, Wenya in Chitipa and Shire in Balaka, fell vacant following the deaths of their respective ward councillors.

Several political parties including those in the Tonse Alliance have already expressed readiness to feature candidates in the polls.

They include Malawi Congress Party, UTM, Alliance for Democracy and Democratic Progressive Party.

During the launch of the by-elections recently, Mec Commissioner Emmanuel Fabiano warned political parties against violence if the elections are to be free, fair and credible.
