One of the commissioners at the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) Mary Nkosi will lead a team of observers to the presidential elections in Rwanda under the Common Market for East and Southern Africa (Comesa).

The polls are set for August 4 2017 following the 2015 referendum that unanimously approved a constitutional amendment that allowed President Paul Kagame to run for office this year.

Nkosi, who is Vice- Chairperson for Comesa’s Committee of Elders, confirmed the news in an interview Monday that she has a duty to serve.

“It’s a milestone and my appointment is simply being asked to perform and will do just that with support of the rest of the mission to the election,” said Nkosi.

She added that she does not look at her appointment through the gender spectacles, arguing men and women in the elders’ committee complement each other and that the success of the mission to Rwanda will be resultant of collaborated efforts.

The team is expected in Rwanda’s capital Kigali on July 27 and will observe the pre-election, election and post-election activities.

The Comesa news desk reports that the delegation will also issue preliminary statements immediately after observing the elections and comprehensive reports will follow after 90 days.
