Mec for more credible elections

Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) Chairperson Chifundo Kachale Thursday said there was room to make the elections in the country fairer and more credible.

Kachale said much as the 2020 fresh presidential election was fair, Mec is ready to receive feedback.

He made the remarks at the multi-liaison committee stakeholders meeting to review the fresh presidential election that Malawi held on June 23.

“As part of the learning process, throughout the electoral cycle, we are supposed to meet the electoral stakeholders. Our idea is to receive feedback both positive and where to improve,” Kachale said.

Democratic Progressive Party District Governor for Nkhotakota, Anthony Manyamba, said political violence in some parts of the district was registered a few days prior to polling day.

“There was tension among people because everyone wanted to win. In some cases, we had to report to the police. Nevertheless, we didn’t see or hear tension during and after the election,” Manyamba said.

The fresh presidential election was ordered by the High Court sitting as a Constitutional Court after it nullified the May 2019 presidential poll.

During the fresh election, 4.4 million people voted out of 6.8 million who registered representing a turnout of 64.8 percent.
