Mec hands over polling materials to Parliament

By Wezzie Gausi:
Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) officials Monday handed over polling materials to Parliament for safekeeping, as stipulated in Section 119 of the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections Act.
Commissioner Jean Mathanga said the materials were records for the December 15 2020 by-election.
The by-election was held in Mangochi West, Mangochi North East and Phalombe North constituencies.
“In accordance with the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections Act Section 119, the commission is here to hand over the records for safekeeping by the Clerk of Parliament. The materials will be kept for a year and it is our anticipation that, when the time comes to destroy them, we shall involve all the needed stakeholders,” Mathanga said.
The commissioner further pleaded with Parliament to keep the materials safe in case they are needed.
Deputy Clerk of Parliament Chimwemwe Kachinjika pledged to keep the materials safe.
He also announced that they would be destroying 2019 presidential and parliamentary elections materials.
