Meck Mwase dubs Cameroon trip ‘as an eye opener’

Flames coach Meck Mwase has described his trip to Cameroon as an eye-opener ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals’ draw to take place at Yaoundé Conference Centre Tuesday.

Mwase said he was excited to attend the draw, which will give him and Football Association of Malawi (Fam) guidance on the preparations for Afcon finals to be staged in January next year.

“I have already attended several meetings. All the meetings have been very important. We have been briefed on the match venues, accommodation and other logistics,” Mwase said.

Before departure on Friday, he told the Fam official website that he was not scared of facing any opponent.

“In football, there are never easy draws and we will welcome whatever teams we will be paired against. Knowing our opponents will help us start preparations for Afcon as it will guide us on which type of players we should select and teams to engage for friendly matches as well as camping destinations,” he is quoted as saying.

Interestingly, the Flames will also face Cameroon in the opening match in the 2022 Qatar Fifa World Cup qualifiers on September 4 before hosting Mozambique at Orlando Stadium on September 7.

According to draw format, top ranked teams are seeded in pot one. This means the Flames are likely to be paired against Africa heavy-weights such as Senegal, Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Tunisia, Ivory Coast and Ghana.

Former Flames midfielder Sherry Msuku said Malawi should go to Afcon finals to compete.

“We should get prepared to face any team. If we prepare well, we can reach far in the tournament,” he said.

Malawi will be making a third appearance at the continental showpiece finals after 1984 in Ivory Coast and 2010 in Angola.

The Flames finished second in Group B of the Afcon qualifiers, with 10 points, two points behind Burkina Faso, who qualified as group winners.
