Malawi National Football Team Coach Meck Mwase has made two changes to the 23-member Flames squad ahead of back-to-back World Cup qualifiers against Ivory Coast early next month.

The Flames will host the Elephants at Orlando Stadium in Durban, South Africa, on October 8 before travelling to Benin for the return leg three days later.

Announcing names of members of the squad during a virtual press conference Tuesday, Mwase said he had maintained majority of players for continuity as the forthcoming assignments were crucial.

“If we want to qualify, these are the games we need to win. We know the strength of Nyoni and we believe he will bring something new to the team,” Mwase said.

All the three goalkeepers, namely Richard Chipuwa, Ernest Kakhobwe and Brighton Munthali, are in the squad.

Simba SC attacking midfielder Duncan Nyoni has replaced Chimwemwe Idana, who has two yellow cards, whereas Silver Strikers defender Nickson Mwase has replaced Nixon Nyasulu of Nyasa Big Bullets.

The Malawi-based players are expected to undergo Covid tests Thursday before joining camp on Saturday.

Mwase described the two matches as very crucial.

Former Flames midfielder Sherry Msuku hailed Mwase for selecting players on merit.

“I did not expect more changes in the squad because he has good crop of players.

This is the best squad and we can do well against Ivory Coast,”

Malawi are third in Group D with three points from two matches following the 1-0 win over Mozambique and a 2-0 loss to Cameroon.

Ivory Coast top the group with four points from the same number of matches whereas Cameroon are second with three points. Mozambique anchor the table with just one point from two matches.

The Malawi-based players will regroup this weekend and will leave for South Africa on Monday.

The Flames are third, having lost 2-0 to Cameroon and won 1-0 over Mozambique.
