Meck Mwase urges players

Malawi national football team Coach, Meck Mwase, has urged football players in the country to continue focusing on keeping fit while observing social distance.

The country’s football season failed to kick off in March after the government announced a ban on all sports activities in a bid to bring Covid-19 under control.

This resulted into teams suspending training sessions due to the uncertainty surrounding the kick off date for the new season.

Mwase said he was happy that the majority of local based players are adhering to their clubs’ programmes on training from home as a precautionary measure against contracting coronavirus.

“I am happy that most of the players are working out from their respective homes. My plea is that they should not relax because we do not know when exactly football would resume in the country. It is good for the players to remain professional during this time and avoid gaining weight,” he said.

The Flames mentor has also been able to follow foreign-based stars through video clips as the pandemic continues wreaking havoc across the world.

Mwase is hoping to have a fully fit squad for various international assignments scheduled for the year should coronavirus be brought under control.

The former TN Stars mentor recently signed a one-year contract with the government after working for almost nine months without a contract.

He swayed Football Association of Malawi to hire him after guiding the Flames to the quarterfinals of the Cosafa Cup last year after winning two games and drawing once.

Malawi were booted out of the regional competition after a 4-2 loss on post-match penalties to Zambia.

The Flames are third in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with three points from two games, just one point behind joint leaders Uganda and Burkina Faso who have also played the same number of games.
