Media Council of Malawi (MCM) has appointed a new board of trustees, with Wisdom Chimgwede and Edyth Kambalame being elected chairperson and vice chairperson, respectively.

The announcement was made in a press statement, which executive director Moses Kaufa signed on Sunday.

“The development follows the December 18 2020 MCM General Assembly, which endorsed amendments to the institution’s constitution. The amendments, among others, included removal of the National Governing Council (NGC) from the governance structure and rearranging the governance structure such that there is General Assembly, then Board of Trustees, committees to the board of trustees and finally the Secretariat. Based on this rearrangement, the General Assembly agreed that, upon expiry of trustees’ term of office on January 16 2021, the National Governing Council which was elected in August 2020 will be elevated to become Board of Trustees.

“The amendment also means that, going forward, the General Assembly will be electing members of the Board of Trustees and not NGC as was the case previously. On 16th January 2021, the Council held a transitional Board of Trustees meeting which saw the defunct NGC taking office as a new Board of Trustees,” the statement reads.

The newly appointed board members are George Kasakula from Times Group, Aston Gondwe from Malawi Broadcasting Corporation, Gabriel Kamlomo from Zodiak Broadcasting Station, Gilfod Matonga from Public Affairs Committee, Madalo Samati from Council for Non-Governmental Organisations, Innocent Nazombe from Tuntufye Radio, Clement Mseteka from Mzimba Community Radio, Patricia Kamnkhwani from Trans World Radio and Madalitso Kausi from Malawi Law Society.
