African Union Sports Council Region Five will involve the media in selecting winners for its 2018 regional awards.

The presentation ceremony will take place on May 26 in Johannesburg, South Africa, with four nominated Malawians hoping to make the shortlist.

Region Five Project and Marketing Manager, Siyabonga Sangweni, said organisers have asked each member country to form a panel of four media personnel to scrutinise the shortlisted nominees and come up with the winners.

“We will have two journalists from print media and another two from electronic media. They will select the winner from the shortlist of three nominees for each category. We will send them profiles and all the relevant information about the nominees so that they make informed choices,” Sangweni said.

He said, in the case of a tie between shortlisted nominees, the executive panel will vote to determine the ultimate winner.

Sangweni said various stakeholders in the 10 member countries are casting their votes for nominees in the 10 categories.

Griffin Youngsters owner and Coach, Griffin Saenda Junior, who is also junior Flames Team Manager and Malawi national netball team Fitness Trainer, is contesting for the Coach of the Year award.

Prominent referee Bernadettar Kwimbira-Nzika was nominated for the Sportsperson of the Year.
