Malawi national football team interim Coach Meke Mwase has dropped Silver Strikers goalkeeper Brighton Munthali from his squad on disciplinary grounds.
Munthali made headlines last week for the wrong reasons when he criticised the Mwase-led technical panel through social media for choosing Ernest Kakhobwe ahead of him during the away 2020 African Nations Championship (Chan) match against eSwatini.
The Flames regrouped in Blantyre Monday in preparation for the return match slated for May 11 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
Mwase has replaced Munthali with his Silver Strikers teammate Charles Thom.
“I had no choice but to drop Munthali to maintain discipline in the team. He is a very good goalkeeper but discipline is of paramount importance,” he said.Advertisement
Munthali said he expected the exclusion.
“I knew that I would not be called up this time because I expressed my feelings after being benched during the eSwatini match. But, officially, no one has come forward to tell me why I have been dropped,” he said.
Mwase has also handed a call up to Civil Sporting Club striker Raphael Phiri, who replaced injured Peter Banda of Nyasa Big Bullets.
However, Mwase bemoaned the lack of wingers in his squad.
“We were indeed looking for wingers but all the options are injured. So we have to do with the available players,” Mwase said.
Local coach Thom Mkolongo said Mwase should have walked the talk by including wingers in the squad.
“I was expecting him to make changes to the squad because he said he wanted wingers. But I am surprised that no new winger has been included,” Mkolongo said.
Malawi exited the Chan tournament in the preliminary round when they lost 2-0 on aggregate to Madagascar.
