Meke Mwase guns for win in first Flames match

By Williams Gongwa in eSwatini:

Malawi national football team caretaker Coach, Meke Mwase, sits for his first test as he leads his charges against eSwatini during a 2020 African Nations Championship qualifier in Manzini.

The two sides square off at Mavuso Sports Centre in a match Mwase needs to win so that he convinces Malawians about his suitability for the job.

Malawi arrived in eSwatini late on Thursday evening having travelled by bus from Johannesburg, South Africa.

Mwase is under the spotlight having taken over the reins from Belgian Ronny van Geneudgen whose contract was not renewed after it expired on March 31.

“It is important for us to get a result here. We just need to play as a unit. As a technical panel, we explained our mission to the team and being a competition, the players know what we need to do to get a good result,” he said.

Mwase has had coaching stints in eSwatini but he said that does not matter much now because football has evolved.

“The experience might be handy somehow even though a lot has changed,” he said.

The last meeting between the two sides ended 1-0 in favour of the Flames at Kamuzu Stadium during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

This time around, Mwase, who is being assisted by Lovemore Fazili of Silver Strikers and Be Forward Wanderers mentor Bob Mpinganjira, has an arsenal of youthful and experienced players.

Forwards Chiukepo Msowoya, Gastin Simkonda and Zicco Mkanda have proved to be natural goalscorers in the TNM Super League and Mwase is hoping the trio can transfer their local form to the national team.

Youthful players such as Hassan Kajoke, Patrick Phiri, Chimwemwe Idana and Mike Mkwate also provide options for the Flames.

Captain John Lanjesi is expected to marshal the defence with support from Stanley Sanudi and Gomezgani Chirwa.

Nyasa Big Bullets goalkeeper, Ernest Kakhobwe, is expected to man the posts ahead of Silver Strikers goal minder Brighton Munthali.
