MHC Sticking to 6, 500 houses

The Malawi Housing Corporation has dismissed reports that it plans to sell some of its houses to its tenants, as it is already struggling to meet the country’s growing housing demand.

Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) has 6, 500 houses nationwide.

According to its spokesperson Enerstina Lunguzi, the figure does not quantify for offices and hostels.

In an interview, Lunguzi said the corporation would construct more houses if given the financial muscle.

“The Corporation has the capacity to construct more houses given financing to do so. The Housing construction could be done using in-house personnel as well as contracting out,” she said.

Lunguzi further said MHC has an ambition to build 25, 000 houses every year for the next ten years.

However, she disclosed that the Corporation only built 240 houses in its last housing project.

“We cannot quantify how many houses we can construct in a year because our choice of number of houses to construct in a year depends on financial availability.  But the Corporation is confident that it can meet this target in a year,” she concluded.
