Minister of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife Michael Usi Wednesday called upon musicians in the country to be disciplined and responsible in their artistry.

Usi, who is also a renowned comedian, was speaking Wednesday in Lilongwe during the opening of the Musicians Union of Malawi (Mum) congress.

“If the creative sector is to grow and help in the development of the country, then there is need for discipline and being responsible in the way they handle themselves,” the minister said.

The minister has since assured the creative industry that the government is ready to table the National Arts and Heritage Council (Nahec) Draft Bill which will lead to the establishment of Nahec in Parliament in February next year.

With many arts associations operating without subvention from the government, creatives have been lobbying for the enactment of the draft Nahec Bill which is long overdue.

Outgoing Mum President Gloria Manong’a said Nahec is crucial in that it will among others, help in providing creatives in the country with resources.

Apart from amending Mum’s constitution during the congress, musicians yesterday were also expected to hold elections to usher in a new National Executive Committee (Nec).

As we went to press, elections had not yet been done but Manong’a seeking re-election was battling it out with Anthony Dumbah and Kalimba Band leader Vita Chirwa for the presidency.
