Mighty Wanderers hail goalkeeper William Thole

Mighty Wanderers has hailed goalkeeper William Thole for displaying outstanding performance when the Lali Lubani Road side progressed to the semifinals of the Airtel Top 8 Cup.

Thole converted two penalties, including one in regulation time, as Wanderers overpowered Moyale Barracks 5-4 on post-match penalties at Chitowe Stadium in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota District.

Thole was composed enough to convert the winning penalty during the shootout.

However, it was his penalty during regulation time that caught the attention of everyone as regular penalty takers such as Wanderers Captain Alfred Manyozo Jnr left the responsibility in the hands of the dreadlocked shot-stopper.

He converted it beautifully, to leave the tie wide open as it cancelled out Lloyd Njaliwa’s first leg goal that saw Moyale beating Wanderers 1-0 at Kamuzu Stadium.

Wanderers Head Coach Bob Mpinganjira said Thole was one of their best penalty takers.

“The goalkeeper proved that he is the best as all the players in the team trusted him to take the penalty in the course of the game. It was not an easy thing to do. He is good and we are happy for him,” Mpinganjira said.

Wanderers Team Manager Foster Namwera also applauded Thole, saying he was equally good with his footwork, no wonder his fellow players relied on him to take the penalty.

“He is always on top of his game. During training, he has been scoring penalties so we knew that he will not let us down,” Namwera said.

Thole said he was confident that he would score both penalties because he had been practicing to perfect his skill.

“I have been training on penalties because I know that it reaches a point where the goalkeeper needs to motivate his colleagues in the field of play. So when we got that penalty in the first half, my teammates said I should take it. I am glad I didn’t disappoint,” Thole said.
