Mike Kumanga named Mafco coach

Mafco FC have appointed Mike Kumanga as their Head Coach for the 2018 season, The Daily Times has learnt.

Kumanga, who was fired as Red Lions’ coach after a disastrous TNM Super League second round performance, has replaced Temwa Msuku, who has been appointed as assistant to Billy Phambala at Kamuzu Barracks.

Mafco Team Manager, Maxwell Simoko, confirmed the development, saying Kumanga was expected to report for this week.

“We received communication on Friday that Kumanga will be our new coach. He will be with us for the new season,” Simoko said.

In the absence of Msuku, who was stopped from drilling Mafco pending his redeployment, assistant Coach Gift Kadammanja was in charge of the Salima-based side. Kadammanja has been maintained as an assistant.

Simoko said he is hopeful that Kumanga will lead the team in challenging for all top competitions.

“We will try our best next season to win at least a trophy. We know it will not be easy but we have a good squad capable of withstanding the heat,” Simoko added.

Kumanga, whose last coaching job was with lowly-ranked Zomba Foundation FC, did not answer our phone calls yesterday.

Mafco, just like all Malawi Defence Force (MDF) teams, are on a massive rebuilding exercise as some of their stars are expected to travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo for a peace-keeping mission.

Mafco last lifted a cup in 2013 when they won the Presidential Cup after beating Silver Strikers 10-9 on post-match penalties at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

At the time of Kumanga’s sacking, Lions had 24 points from 24 games. But his succcessor, Nelson Chirwa, posted one of the best records in domestic football by winning seven games and drawing once to help the team escape relegation.

MDF has also reshuffled Lions’ coaching panel, with Stereo Gondwe named Head Coach, to be assisted by Chirwa and Yohane Fulaye.

At Moyale, Charles Kamanga has been promoted to the position of Head Coach whereas Victor Chingoka is his assistant.
