Mind Power: You need a personal vision

There are no secrets to success because success leaves clues. If you want to succeed, all you might have to do is study those who are / were successful and copy their kind of thinking, principles, values, good habits and the work ethics they live(d) by. One of the key traits of successful people is a clear personal vision. They are absolutely clear about why they exist and what they want to achieve.

Jack Canfield in his bestselling book, The Success Principles, says; “each one of us is born with a life purpose. Identifying, acknowledging, and honouring this purpose is perhaps the most important action successful people take”. What were you put on this planet to do?

“Without a vision, the people perish”, says King Solomon. If you have no personal vision, your life will be wasted. You might waste most of your productive years walking in the shadows of other people. You will end up a copy of others. It is therefore absolutely necessary that you take time to discover your personal calling. Why are you here? Your personal vision is deeper and richer than your career. Today you might be working as a secretary or a plumber, but that might not necessarily be your vision. Your job is simply there to help you pay the bills as you go through life. But take time to find your true calling.

Ask yourself some soul- searching and destiny-defining questions: What do I see in my mind? What do I desire to become? At the end of my life, what do I want to look back to and say, “yes, this was a life worth living”.

What kind of a legacy do I want to leave behind when I am finished here on earth? What kind of influence do I want to be to society? Coretta King, wife of Martin Luther King Junior once said that unless a man has found a reason he is willing to die for, he is not yet ready to live.

Malawi is a nation at the bottom of the success ladder because as a nation, we have no unifying compelling vision.

This is why 52 years after independence, we are still dancing to the tune of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. We have been reduced to a beggar, living at the mercy of nations and organisations with visions.

Don’t let this happen to your personal life please. You have to learn from failures, in this case, sadly, your own country. If you have no personal vision you will simply be hired to fulfil other people’s dreams and visions.

Take time out to reflect and respond to the questions I have raised in this column and find out why you were put on this planet.

Write down your personal vision statement. The writer of one of the Old Testament books by the name of Habakkuk says, “Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables or on paper, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” (Habakkuk 2:2-3 KJV).

My divine purpose is summarised as follows: “To inspire, train, motivate and challenge my fellow Africans to discover, develop and deploy their full potential; leading to the realisation of a prosperous and successful Africa“.

This vision statement guides what I focus on, where I stay and who I target in my work. There is nothing that drives and gives me more pleasure and satisfaction than knowing that I have helped someone become successful.

I am committed to design tools and strategies that can help my fellow Africans to discover, develop and deploy their full potential. I really believe that Africa will rise from the bed of poverty when its people believe in themselves and focus on developing themselves without expecting handouts.

Don’t waste your limited time here on earth going through the motions of life aimlessly.

Be focused and know exactly why you exist. Live a purpose-driven life as Pastor Rick Warren advises. You have so much potential hidden within you that will only be unlocked once you align your life with your true purpose and vision. You were created an original, please don’t die a copy.
