Minister admits flaws in government projects
Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa, has admitted that there are some substandard works that are being done in the country.
Nankhumwa said, in the wake of the development, the government has formed a team of qualified persons that is going to monitor projects that are being constructed in different districts in the country.
He made the remarks in Parliament on Thursday following a concern by Nsanje South East parliamentarian, Joseph Chidanti-Malunga, who lamented that there are some poor quality structures being constructed in his area, citing a dyke.
Recently, Vice-President Saulosi Chilima bashed contractors of the dyke, arguing that the quality of the works in Nsanje did not justify the amount of money used.
Chidanti-Malunga demanded to know measures the government has put in place to ensure that structures constructed in future are of good quality.
In his response, Nankhumwa admitted that substandard works are a cause for concern across the country.
“It is indeed true that substandard works are a cause for concern not only to people in Nsanje but to people across the country. The construction of structures at district council level is as a result of the Decentralisation Policy which, on the other hand, is facing hurdles due to unqualified personnel at the council,” Nankhumwa said.
He then said a team of qualified personnel comprising officials from the Department of Buildings and qualified officials from the council would be monitoring construction projects in the county.
