Ministry crafts job reation strategy

Ken Kandodo

Minister of Labour Ken Kandodo has said all is set to establish a strategy that will lead to the creation of one million jobs and monitor trends on the job market in the country.

In an interview recently, Kandodo said the strategy and a job market monitoring software would be launched this month.

Kandodo said a study the ministry conducted has revealed that, to create the jobs, there is need to empower small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

“In Malawi we have thousands upon thousands of SMEs many of them have potential to grow but perhaps they lack capital or stable markets and require government support so our strategy will show which SMEs will be promoted, what they lack and what stakeholders can do to help them.

“…it will also show what kind of policy changes are necessary to help companies to create more jobs for our people. We also discovered that we need to have a mechanism that will help track job creation, so; we have invested in a labour marketing system which will help in tracking these jobs. By the end of March, this system will be running,” Kandodo said.

He added that a separate online job portal would be established where job seekers would upload their resume while employers would place vacancy adverts.

On failing to meet the one million jobs target in the first year, Kandodo blamed the Covid situation which has slowed businesses and forced companies to halt expansions plans let alone hiring.
