The Ministry of Industry and Trade says it is happy with the response among consumers and businesses to the recently launched Buy Malawi Strategy.

Speaking in an interview Wednesday, Minister of Industry and Trade, Joseph Mwanamvekha, said both producers and members of the public have demonstrated willingness to support the strategy.

“The message we are getting is that Malawians are ready to support the strategy. You should come to Lilongwe on Friday and see how both civil servants and non civil servants are dressing in Malawian made clothes in support of the strategy,” said Mwanamvekha.

He said tailoring businesses in Lilongwe are also making a killing out of the strategy as many people have placed orders for traditional clothes to be worn on Friday as requested by President Peter Mutharika during the launch of the strategy.

Mwanamvekha has since challenged textile making companies to produce unique Malawian fabric that people can buy to make traditional and other Malawian style clothes.

He also called on tailors to produce quality clothes, including suits, that people can proudly wear even outside the Fridays as suggested by the president.

“Suits can be made with Malawian produced material such as chitenje which can be won even during formal occasions. We can create the Malawian suit,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mwanamvekha said the Office of the President Cabinet (OPC) has followed up President Mutharika’s pronouncement on public institutions mandatory 30 percent buying of Malawian made stuff with a circular to all government ministries and agencies, enforcing the same.
