The High Court in Zomba will this Friday deliver its ruling on Misozi Chanthunya’s murder case.

“It’s this Friday,” he said.

Body of the late Gasa was found buried in a bathroom of Chanthunya’s cottage in Mangochi.

Chanthunya reportedly left the country then, and was arrested by South African Police on January 24, 2012.

He was later handed over to Malawi after a protracted extradition battle on March 1, 2018.

Mainly Chanthunya resisted the extradition, saying the country still has death penalty for murder convicts.

After another long court battle in the country, Judge Ruth Chinangwa is this Friday expected to deliver her ruling on whether Chanthunya is guilty of the murder or not.

In the course of the trial, one of the state witnesses, Jessie Kachale, who claimed to be Gasa’s close friend told the court in her testimony that the late Gasa had confided in her that she was pregnant for Chanthunya and that he wanted her to terminate the pregnancy.

However, another state witness, Pathologist Charles Dzamalala told the court in his testimony that after thorough examination of the late Gasa’s body, he was of the view that she was not pregnant.

After spending years in police custody here and in South Africa, Supreme Court of Malawi Justice of Appeal Dustain Mwaungulu released Chanthunya on bail in January 2019.

In his ruling, Mwaungulu said where custodial time limit exceeds, the court must release the suspect with or without bail.

Gasa was a student at the Malawi College of Accountancy, Blantyre campus.
