Miss Blantyre auditions start on a high

Miss Blantyre 2015 activities started in earnest on Friday when, in one day, organisers organised two separate public events to usher in a new era for beauty pageant.

But, as if contracting the idea that beauty is everything, the organisers say they want to focus on other positive human traits other than beauty, and this year’s theme is ‘Beyond Beauty’.

As part of activities marking the launch, Miss Blantyre 2015 organisers held a public show at Nthukwa Market, Chilomoni, in the City. In the evening, all roads led to Basement Club in Blantyre Central Business District, where models shored up the show.

Chairperson of the organising committee, Daniel Ngwira, said in an interview that he was impressed with the turn of events, singling out the event held at Nthukwa Trading Centre in Chilomoni as a “turning point”.

“I can safely say that we have started on a high because our first public event in Chilomoni was well-attended by the youth. And the reception at Basement was also amazing. I am sure that this year’s event will be successful because a number of stakeholders have expressed interest in supporting our cause,” said Ngwira.

Ngwira said the Blantyre City Council is one of the institutions that have expressed interest in engaging the would-be Miss Blantyre in their activities. He said other sponsors have also promised to support the initiative, among them an institution that has promised to engage the Queen in an ambassadorial capacity.

He said part of the package would include a brand new vehicle to be used in fulfilling her ambassadorial assignments.

Among those present at the Basement launch was reigning Miss Blantyre Nerani Nthara, who was crowned Miss Blantyre in December 2013.
