Miss Culture Malawi Memory Sanjira Wednesday signed an agreement with Dream Community of St Egidio as its ambassador in the fight against cervical cancer.
Her role will see her taking up a lead in spreading messages to the masses about cervical cancer and this is also in line with this year’s pageant’s theme which is Collective Culture in Conquering Cancer.
Speaking to the press after signing the agreement at Dream Community of St Egidio at Mandala in Blantyre, Sanjira promised to put all her energy into the awareness drive stressing that she has a big task to play.
“It is a great honour to be part of this partnership with Dream and it is all about conquering cancer through awareness to make women understand more about cervical cancer. They need to get screened and know their status,” the beauty queen, who was crowned, last month, said.
Dream Community of St Egidio Executive Director Dr Sangare Hawa Mamary, said it was a pleasure for them to have Miss Culture Malawi as their ambassador for the cancer fight.
“We have been making appeals that we need multisector collaborations in the fight against cancer and on top of that, we know where the high burden of cancer is coming from and the fact is that there is no awareness and we know with Miss Culture Malawi we will reach more people,” Mamary said.
She said the focus for them was to reach rural areas.
“Why is it that Malawi has a high burden of cervical cancer and yet it is a preventable disease and on top of that when screening is detected early, the treatment is there but people do not go for screening and the disease is a slow progression which can take more time but people do not know,” she said.
Mamary said for the country to reach global cancer elimination, there was need to work hand in hand as well as national ownership “because cancer concerns everyone”.
She admitted that the cervical cancer situation was not healthy saying Malawi was among the countries with high burden of the disease.
“All the pillars need information and awareness to clear misconceptions. Many do not want girls to receive vaccination and so, Miss Culture Malawi and the media can help in doing that,” Mamary said.
She said Dream is there to complement the efforts of Ministry of Health through its programmes.
