Miss Ndirande contest Sunday
By Tom Sangala:
No king worth his salt can live without a queen next to him.
And so it is that Ndirande, whose residents regard it as the king of all townships, wants to be complete by crowning its queen on Sunday.
One of the organisers, Laurent Phiri, said Thursday that the event would take place at Afro Motel.
“The event will see about 15 beautiful ladies tussling it out in catwalk and, at the end of the day, three of them have to be declared queen, first and second princess, respectively.
“The winner will secure a scholarship at Sanwecka and will go away with a decoder. All the participating ladies will as well be compensated with a Nokia phone each,” he said.

At the event, patrons will not just sample beauty and the cream of Ndirande. Artists are part of the event.
“We will have, on the line-up, Nepman, Wena 7, Man Chi, Sister Rizzla, Chambiko, Unrully Don Papa and Kaynine, among others.
“There will also be things such as braai, a ruffle draw, martial arts and a display of products,” said the award-winning Phiri.
Rehearsals started on Wednesday, when school-leavers aged 16 years and above thronged the venue of preparations.
One of the contestants, Sphiwe Chimeta, could not hide her excitement.
“I am very ready to contest and I cannot wait for that big day,” she said.
Performing artists have also promised fireworks.
Wena 7, Chambiko and Sister Rizzla said they would put up scintillating performances as events like these come once in a blue moon.
Sanwecka, Crystal Flourist, Afro Motel, Firehouse, Mzika Wear, Team Focus and the Royal Family are sponsors of the event and the legendary Diwa Khwiliro is engineering the whole thing.
The event starts at 12pm and patrons will part ways with K1,000 at the gate.
