Mist surrounds GOtv sponsorship

Cloud of uncertainty surrounds the GOtv Netball Champions League sponsorship, a development that threatens to plunge the domestic netball fraternity into crisis as it is the only remaining national competition.

A week after Airtel Malawi decided against extending its sponsorship for K360 million Airtel Money Trophy and the Malawi Netball Queens, another sponsor, Multichoice Malawi, is mum on the champions league’s future.

The league has conspicuously been missing on this year’s netball calendar, and Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) has not explained the black-out.

The social media has been awash with reports that MultiChoice has withdrawn its support from netball.

MultiChoice Malawi Marketing Manager, Chimwemwe Nyirenda, said it was difficult to hold this year’s tournament due to Nam’s chaotic and tight netball calendar.

“I cannot say that we have withdrawn our support. For this year, it is almost impossible to hold the competition. Nam’s calendar was so tight that it was difficult to plan. Besides, the rainy season is here and we cannot stage the competition this time,” he said.

When asked to state whether the company will continue supporting netball, Nyirenda said MultiChoice Malawi will announce its calendar of events on December 9.

“We are not putting the nation at ransom but that is when you will know our official stand,” he said.

The Champions League has been key to the Queens’ participation in the Fast5 Netball World Series as it was in line with its rules.

Nam General Secretary, Carol Bapu, said they were yet to discuss with MultiChoice over the league, whose champions are Kukoma Diamond Australia.

Another local company, Alliance Capital Limited, has also withdrawn its netball club support after criticising Nam of failing to resolve a transfer dispute against Tigresses over the aborted transfer of Lauren Ngwira s.
