Mixed fortunes for Bravehearts

Central Zone Basketball League giants, Bravehearts Men’s and Bravehearts Ladies, endured mixed fortunes during the eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) Invitational Tournament held over the weekend in Manzini.

The men’s team secured fifth spot after exiting the competition from the quarter-final stage whereas the ladies’ team finished as runners-up.

Bravehearts Men’s started on a high, having won three opening games before crashing out of the tournament.

In an in interview from eSwatini, Bravehearts Patron and Coach, Griffin Kalua, said he was satisfied with the teams’ exploits during the tournament.

“Bravehearts Men’s finished fifth in the 16- team tournament involving teams from Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mozambique.

“They beat champions of Swaziland, Lesotho and a South African team before losing to a Mozambican team and to eventual champions Phoenix (South Africa) in the quarter-finals. It is the first time for a Malawian team to reach the quarter-finals.

“On the other hand, our ladies also did very well by beating teams from South Africa and Mozambique to reach the final, before losing to Zimbabwe’s Green Stars,” Kalua said

Stars won the ladies’ category championship.

Bravehearts teams were making a debut at the tournament but have participated in several international events in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania.
