Owner of newly promoted TNM Super League outfit Mlatho Mponela FC, Maxwel Phiri, has died in a road accident in Ntcheu District.
Police in the district said the accident occurred on Sunday night in Tsamba area along Golomoti- Masasa Road, popularly known as Khwekhwelele.
Ntcheu Police Station publicist, Hastings Chigalu, said Phiri, 39, was driving a Toyota Hilux registration number NS 3396 with two passengers on board from Masasa direction heading to Golomoti.
“The victim was driving along the Khwekhwelele stretch, famed for its steep slopes and numerous bends. He failed to negotiate a bend, resulting into the accident,” Chigalu said.
He said the vehicle fell into a stream after swerving to the near side of the road.
“Following the impact, the victim sustained a fracture on his right arm and died moments later at Dedza District Hospital due to loss of blood. The other two passengers escaped unhurt,” Chigalu added.
The deceased was from Mavenje Village, Traditional Authority Zulu, in Mchinji District.
Central Region Football Association General Secretary, Chibirubiru Harawa expressed shock with the death, saying Phiri was a committed club owner.
“We are very saddened with the death of Mr Phiri. We are particularly shocked because his team has just won the championship of our Premier Division.
“He came into the game and invested in his team. The resources he put into the team helped it to earn promotion to the Super League. We will greatly miss him,” Haraba said.
