Mo626 return excites players

Players from teams competing in the National Bank of Malawi plc Mo626 College basketball tournament have expressed excitement with the resumption of action.

The competition returns today with three venues hosting elite eight games in Blantyre.

The venues are Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) indoor and outdoor courts, Blantyre Youth Centre and Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas).

African Bible College (ABC) Lady Lions power forward Modestar Jussah said it was exciting to return to the court after long periods of waiting.

“The period of waiting was quite long and frustrating. Now that the games are finally here, we are ready to play. We are a young team but we have the passion and we will play and have fun on court. We are prepared as a team and I’m very sure we will give it our very best,” Jussah said.

Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) captain Peter James said they are set for the games despite preparations being disturbed as students were sent back home after staging a protest.

“Every player just has to stay fit wherever he is. But we have a good team with high chemistry. We had a lot of practice games before the school closed and we are ready to take down any team standing in our way,” James said.

Mubas Wildcats captain Precious Hausi said: “We are mentally locked in and prepared as we have been eagerly waiting for the games for a while. But physically we could be better as you know the tournament was postponed last year.

“This brought a lot of inconveniences for us as a team. Our training programme was disrupted, thus we haven’t been able to physically prepare as much as we had done last year at the time of postponing the tournament.”

University of Malawi (Unima) Hawks’ Wisdom Kampango said the tournament remains on all players’ minds as they aim at lifting the trophy.

“We are really excited about this great competition. This is what is dominating every player’s thoughts here. We have trained well and everyone is ready to take to the court,” Kampango said.

The ladies’ category has Mubas, Kuhes, Malawi Assemblies of God University (Magu), Must, Bunda, ABC, University of Livingstonia and Unima.

Competitors in the men’s category are Mubas, Must, Kuhes, Magu, ABC, Bunda, Unima and Mzuzu University.
