Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) will inject K4 million to help Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) to send amateur boxers to Senegal for 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifiers next month.
Moc Administration Manager, Naomi Chinatu, said they were supporting the association to achieve its Olympic dream.
“As Moc we always support various sporting activities to prepare and compete at such high level competitions. It is for this reason that we have decided to support Maba with K4 million to go towards the Senegal qualifiers,” she said.
Maba President, Pyson Likagwa, appreciated Moc for the support saying it would help amateurs realise their Olympic dream.
“Every amateur boxer dreams of fighting at major competitions like the Olympics. We thank Moc for supporting us,” he said.
Likagwa said Maba expects additional support from the government through Malawi National Council of Sports.
“More funds will come from the government so that we should be able to travel to Senegal and also qualify for the Olympics,” he said.
Currently, eight amateur boxers are training in Lusaka, Zambia in readiness of the Olympic qualifiers. Six would be selected to travel to Senegal.
Likagwa said they expect the amateurs to return in top condition to boost their chances of qualifying for this year’s Olympic Games set for Tokyo in Japan.
“They are currently undergoing intensive training. Their diet has also been monitored so that they should either reduce or add weight. The international camp will end on Saturday [today] with boxers taking part in non-title bouts. This has been one of our best preparations,” he said.
