Teams from the country’s regional leagues have received an extra motivation in this season’s Carlsberg Cup.
This is the case as Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has announced that it will increase the number of regional representatives in the cup’s national phase.
Fam Competitions Manager, Gomezgani Zakazaka, said yesterday the number of regional representatives had been doubled from last year’s nine to 16 this season.
“The reason is the increase in the number of Super League teams from 15 to 16. We thought it would be better to have 16 teams as well from the regional leagues to join the Super League teams in the Round of 32,” Zakazaka said at Fam’s Mpira Village in Blantyre during the regional draw of the competition yesterday.
Southern Region Football Association league (SRFA) would send eight representatives to the national phase, five from the Central Region and three from the North.
“A few years ago, we saw a team from the Southern Region, Zomba United, making it to the final. This time around the teams have more opportunities but it is all up to them to work hard and prove themselves against the Super League teams,” he said.
This season, SRFA teams would play two rounds of matches to determine the successful eight teams. Balaka Eagles and Mitra Icon were seeded for the first round draw.
This year’s competition is sponsored to the tune of K40 million and the champions would walk away with K12 million.
Be Forward Wanderers are the defending champions after defeating rivals Nyasa Big Bullets 2-1 in last year’s final.
