Police in Nsanje have arrested 54-year-old woman, Christina Zakeyo, of Nyandolo Village, Traditional Authority Malemia in the district, on suspicion that she murdered her 27-year-old son, Yesaya Zakeyo, over food.
Nsanje Police spokesperson, Agnes Zalakoma, said the incident happened on the night of September 9.
“The deceased and his mother were drunk when they quarreled over the food. The mother pushed him and he fell on a big [log of] wood where he sustained severe head injuries. He lost a lot of blood and was pronounced dead at Nsanje District Hospital,” she said.
In another development, 18-year-old Jonathan Joseph of Mkwatula Village, Traditional Authority Malemia, in the district was found dead hanging from a tree.
Zalakoma said the boy is suspected to have killed himself in frustration after his relatives rejected his request for a bus fare for his trip to Blantyre.
“We urge people to exercise restraint and resolve misunderstandings amicably before resorting to physical confrontations or suicide,” she said.
