Moyale Barracks have failed to qualify for this year’s Airtel Top 8 Cup after losing to brothers in arms Red Lions 2-1 in a TNM Super League match at Mzuzu Stadium on Saturday.
Teams that will finish in the top eight at the end of the first round will be eligible to compete in the Top 8 Cup.
Currently, Moyale lie on position 12 with 14 from 14 games and a win in their remaining game is not enough to take them to Top 8 Cup.
Moyale Coach Pritchard Mwansa said the Lions of Kaning’ina were bitter to have failed to qualify for the Airtel Top 8 Cup.
“Let us not beat about the bush we have failed to qualify for the Airtel Top 8 Cup because of this defeat. It is quite disturbing that we will not compete in the cup. We were supposed to win to remain in contention. There is nothing we can do but to look forward to fix our house,” he said.
Meanwhile, five years have elapsed since Moyale reached the final of any domestic cup.
In 2017, Moyale lost 1-0 to their fellow soldiers Kamuzu Barracks in the defunct Fisd Challenge Cup final at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.
Last year, Moyale were knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Airtel Top 8 after losing to Wanderers on aggregate.
Currently teams such as Nyasa Big Bullets, Blue Eagles, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, Silver Strikers, Kamuzu Barracks, Mafco and Civo Service United are among the favourites to take part in the Airtel Top 8.
