Moyale, Wolves defend Raiply volleyball titles

Moyale Barracks and Wolves Ladies have retained the K5.5 million Raiply National Volleyball titles.

In men’s category, Moyale came from behind to defeat brothers-in-arms Kamuzu Barracks 3-2 to win the title for the seventh time.

Moyale General Secretary Reignford Khunga said, despite defending the championship, competition was stiff.

“We had to sweat for it because Kamuzu Barracks have greatly improved,” he said.

In response, Kamuzu Barracks General Secretary Alvin Sambo said they lost the match in the last two sets having lost their killer instinct.

“It was a tight contest but we lacked the killer punch. Our energy levels went down when we needed it the most to finish off the game. Honestly it is a painful loss,” Sambo said.

In this category, Mipuniro Spikers ended on third.

In the ladies category, Wolves thrashed Vixens 3-1 to win the accolade for the third successive time. Kamuzu Barracks Ladies finished on third in the women’s category.

In individual category, Moses Mzumara of Moyale Barracks won the most valuable player award in ladies category while Sithembile Mhango of Vixens won a similar award in women’s category.

The three-day tournament’s grand finale was held at Katoto Sports Complex in Mzuzu City.

Raiply Malawi Limited Chief Executive Officer Khrishna Das pledged continued support.

“We are excited with the management of the tournament and, every year, the competition is growing. We are coming again next year and will increase the package,” Das said.

Volleyball Association of Malawi President James Kaunda commended the company for the support.

“Teams have been energised ahead of the National Volleyball League which will be launched this weekend in Lilongwe,” Kaunda said.

The champions in both categories got a trophy, gold medals and K700,000 each while runners-up received silver medals and K400,000 each.
