MP Billy Kanjira Banda dies
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament for Mchinji West Billy Kanjira Banda died suddenly Sunday morning.
MCP Public Relations Officer, Alekeni Menyani confirmed the development.
“We are told that after coming from church, he started complaining of some pains in the chest. He leaned against the steering wheel of his parked car. He was taken to Dae Yang Luke Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” Menyani said.
He said Kanjira Banda’s death is a big loss to the MCP.
“His death has come as a shock. The party has lost a loyal member, someone who stood for his people,” Menyani said.
The MP won the Mchinji West seat in May 2014 elections after beating five other candidates, who included Patricia Banda, Mariana Chinsana, Joseph Mazizi, Lawrence Mbenjere and Theresa Mwale.
On Friday he was sent out of the chamber and was told to go back to Parliament Monday afternoon. First Deputy Speaker, Esther Mcheka Chilenje invoked Standing Order 105 after Kanjira Banda was judged to have displayed ‘dishonourable’ behaviour in the House.
Kanjira Banda had accused the First Deputy Speaker of ‘supporting the other side’ of the House by allowing some MPs to interrupt him as he was holding the floor.
