MP Billy Kanjira Banda laid to rest
Fallen Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Mchinji West, Billy Kanjira Banda, was Tuesday laid to rest at Kamangirira Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Simphasi in the district with prominent politicians from different parties among those who paid their last respects.
Some of them were Speaker of Parliament Richard Msowoya, MCP president and Leader of Opposition, Lazarus Chakwera, former vice-president, Khumbo Kachali, Leader of the House, Francis Kasaila, People’s Party senior officials Kamlepo Kalua and Ralph Jooma and Alliance for Democracy president Enock Chihana.
Others were Cabinet Ministers Henry Mussa, Joseph Mwanamvekha and Peter Kumpalume, Clerk of Parliament Fiona Kalemba, Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) commissioner Reverend Emmanuel Chimkwita Phiri and MPs from different political parties.
Banda collapsed and died on Sunday and until his death, he was a member of three parliamentary committees of education, defence and transport.
He was ordered out of Parliament on Friday after clashing with First Deputy Speaker Esther Mcheka- Chilenje who told him to return to the chamber on Monday with evidence supporting his claims that some members from the government side had been promised millions which would come from the national budget.
In his eulogy, Chakwera said Kanjira Banda was a dedicated member of the party who always offered support and advice when needed such that his sudden death was a big blow to the party.
Chakwera described death as something that comes in any form such that it has to be accepted that it has been given to man to die once “but there is no one who knows how they will die.”
“Many questions here have no answers. Wise people wanted to give answers but no one can explain the wisdom of God. I’m asking everyone to remain calm,” said Chakwera.
Others who delivered their eulogies were Msowoya, Kasaila, Kachali and Chihana. Most of them described the late Kanjira Banda as a brave lawmaker who always fought for the best especially when it came to representing his constituents in particular and the whole nation at large. He was 56
