MP builds house for Chilembwe’s family

After waiting on promises from politicians, promises that were never fulfilled, the family of Reverend John Chilembwe has finally been given a house which has been built behind the Providence Industrial Mission (PIM) in Chiradzulu.

The K5 million houses, has been built by Member of Parliament for Chiradzulu Central Hanif Osman Issa, popularly known as OG Issa, and will house 62-year-old descendant of John Chilembwe, Group Village Head (GVH) Kumitete.

GVH Kumitete has been appealing for support to have a decent house after the one she was living in got dilapidated and started leaking.

Speaking during the handover ceremony of the house on Saturday, GVH Kumitete expressed gratitude for the gesture.

“I don’t want to say much for fear of offending other quarters that promised this house and never built. I’m very grateful to OG Issa for coming to my rescue. Since 1994, this house has been on the lips of politicians but as they say, there is time for everything. This is the time. I thank God,” said Kumitete.

Issa said he was moved after the media reported that the senior descendant was leaving in a leaking house.

“This village has a historical background and as such Kumitete deserves a better house. The house is complete and what remains are curtains. The challenge is on the people in this village to take care of the house and not vandalise it,” said Issa.

Reverend Patrick Makondesa from the PIM witnessed the handover ceremony of the house and appealed to other well-wishers to help the Chilembwe family.

“We are grateful for the intervention. The church will now focus on other pressing issues that need to be addressed at the family. If there are other well-wishers, they can come in and help the family,” said Makondesa.

Chilembwe led an uprising against the injustice that white settlers were inflicting on locals in the 1900s such as unfair labour practice of thangata system.

The country commemorates Chilembwe Day every year on 15 January and President Peter Mutharika attended this year’s event at PIM on Sunday.
